New Year, New Smile: Tips for Better Dental Health in 2025

January 8, 2025

Happy New Year! We all know of the standard resolutions, like diet, exercise, cut back here, do more there, but what about your mouth?

Starting 2025 with a focus on better dental health is a worthy goal! Here are some tips to help you improve and maintain your oral hygiene, which affects your overall health:

Daily Habits

  1. Brush Twice Daily
Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your teeth for at least two minutes, once in the morning and before bed.
  2. Floss Daily
Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between your teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. Regular flossing also makes your cleaning appointments much better!
  3. Rinse with Mouthwash
Antimicrobial or fluoride rinses can help strengthen enamel and reduce plaque buildup. Adding a pre-rinse before flossing and brushing can help, as well.

Healthy Eating for Oral Health

  1. Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks
Cavities can be a result of consumption of candies, sodas, and other high-sugar products. Not to mention the other health benefits from cutting down on these items.
  2. Eat Calcium-Rich Foods
Incorporate dairy products, leafy greens, and nuts to support strong teeth and bone health.
  3. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water to help rinse away food particles and promote saliva production. Most of us live in a mildly dehydrated state. Drinking more water is a worthy goal, indeed!

Routine Dental Visits

  1. Schedule Regular Check-Ups – Of Course we’d say that, but really…
Visit your dentist at least twice a year for cleanings and exams. They can catch issues early and prevent larger problems.
  2. Address Issues Promptly
Don’t delay treatment for toothaches, sensitivity, bleeding gums or other dental concerns. It may not be as bad as you think, and you can address the issues head on!

Lifestyle Choices

  1. Quit Smoking
Smoking is a leading cause of gum disease and stains teeth. Quitting improves oral and overall health.
  2. Vaping can also affect your teeth
The chemicals in vape juice can damage enamel and irritate soft tissue. The sticky ingredients can also increase the risk of tooth decay, among other oral hygiene issues, such as bad breath, stained teeth and gum disease.
  3. Wear a Mouthguard
If you grind your teeth at night or play sports, a mouthguard can protect your teeth from damage.

Set Goals for the Year

  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months or when bristles fray. It’s easy to ignore this but so important to change it out, especially if you or your family has been sick!
  • Teach children good oral hygiene habits early on. Learning a lifetime of good oral hygiene is a habit worth cultivating! Your teeth can be with you for your lifetime!
  • Try a new product like an electric toothbrush or water flosser to improve your routine. Ask your dentist for recommendations or more oral hygiene tips!
